When is the best time for hiking in the Dolomites?
Again and again guests ask us: Which is the best hiking month? Apart from the fact that it is always beautiful here in Selva, we are real fans of early summer. If you want to enjoy the splendour of the Dolomites to the fullest and like it quiet and tranquil, you will find the best conditions for a relaxing active holiday in South Tyrol in May and June. While many people are drawn to the sea, it is wonderfully quiet here in the mountains at this time. Nature is at its most lush and green and fine temperatures make a hiking holiday particularly pleasant. Our Hotel Sella hiking experts now tell you which easy hikes with wow factor you should definitely tackle on your next holiday in the Dolomites:
Once around the Sassolungo
The Sassolungo is THE landmark of Val Gardena and simply too beautiful to just look at from a distance. If you already have some experience on the mountain and a basic level of fitness, you can walk around the Sassolungo in about three and a half hours. Start with the cable car just opposite the Hotel Sella, at the top of the mountain station via the Comici Hut to the Steinerne Stadt and the Sella Joch. Continue with the Sassolungo cable car to the Toni Demetz Hut and from there descend to the Sassolungo Hut (Rifugio Vicenza). Here you have a wonderful view down to the Alpe di Siusi. The way back is via the Comici Hut to Plan de Gralba.
From the Sella Joch to the stone city
The hiking bus takes you to the Sella Joch, from where you can reach the legendary "stone city" with its fairytale rock formations in just over an hour. On the "Naturronda" you will also learn exciting facts about the flora and fauna of Val Gardena. You can also take this route as part of the Sassolungo circuit mentioned earlier.
Off to the Comici Hut!
The Comici Hut is part of the family and one of the most unusual huts in the Dolomites. Up there you will be served the finest herbal cuisine and sparkling champagne. And what a view! From Plan de Gralba you can reach the Comici Hut in 60 minutes on foot.
Holiday directly at the mountain railway
The Dolomites of Val Gardena offer challenges and dream routes also or especially for demanding alpinists and experienced hikers. The Hotel Sella is the perfect starting point for mountain tours, the cable car is right opposite. It takes mountain enthusiasts up to the lofty heights of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site in no time at all.
